Review by Graeme Hobbs on 7th April 2004

It was said that Joseph Campbell ‘could make the bones of folklore and anthropology live’ and this is exactly what he does in the series of interviews that form The Power of Myth. Punctuated with life-enhancing insights, Campbell’s series is based on the premise that people are stuck with old metaphors and myths that don’t fit their needs any more, and that as the world changes, new mythologies need to be created. His desire for the subject stemmed from a deep need to understand the power of the legends of the human race and the recurrent themes that energize the imagination. Campbell said that ‘myths are clues to the rapture of being alive’ and this series will leave you thinking, questioning and trying just that little bit harder than before.

Review by Graeme Hobbs on 16th April 2007

You would search fruitlessly for a series with more consistently striking, life-enhancing insights than this. In these conversations between teacher and mythologist Joseph Campbell and journalist Bill Moyers – filmed at George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch during the last two summers of Campbell’s life – Campbell eloquently presents his ideas about the ongoing role of myths in human society, and the pull they continue to exert on our unconscious. Showing how a primal spiritual force is expressed in many manifestations across different cultures and religions, he also argues that because societies cling to old myths, they risk becoming ossified. We not only need to realise how thoroughly myths permeate our daily lives so that we can better realise our own journeys of self-discovery, but we also need new myths so that we can interact better with the world as it is now. All this is presented clearly and persuasively; The Power of Myth is for everyone.
On the screen, Campbell’s ideas most famously influenced George Lucas’s Star Wars.
