The Count of Monte Cristo (1998)
Film Description This French TV mini-series adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' celebrated novel follows the adventures of Edmond Dantès (Gerard Depardieu), a rich, ruthless and suave purveyor of homemade justice. The production, which was filmed at locations all over Europe, is both lavish and immensely detailed, having the distinction of being the first filmed version of the newly-restored unabridged version of Dumas' classic.

Review by Mellifluous on 12th September 2001 I saw this at Christmas when it was aired on BBC television. It had me and my family hooked, as Edmond Dantes rises from wrongly-imprisoned innocent to the most powerful man in France. Each episode ends on a cliff-hanger as he plots to wreak terrible revenge on those who conspired to imprison him. Intelligent, poetic and moving, the beautiful French dialogue only heightens the drama, and the scene where he escapes the Chateau d'If is one of the most memorable scenes I have ever seen in a film or television programme. A classic, this gem is one of the ones to watch.
