Review by Barry Forshaw on 20th May 2004

This disc is something of a justification of the DVD medium – mainly for one transfiguring element: the restoration of William Walton’s dramatic score, replaced (against the wishes of the film’s star, Laurence Olivier) on the film’s cinema release. Re-issued to coincide with the 60th anniversary of D-Day, director Guy Hamilton’s film assembled an impressive cast for this representation of how the R.A.F defeated the German Luftwaffe in World War II. This 2-disc special edition DVD includes a host of extras including 3 featurettes. Perhaps the dramatic content doesn’t take wing like the aerial sequences, but the restoration of Walton’s score makes this a powerful experience. MGM have also issued the epic A Bridge too Far.
