Film Description

This intimate film chronicles two hours in the life of Cleo, a chanteuse, who is waiting to hear if she has terminal cancer. Varda captures the look, feel and sounds of Paris as Cleo views the world with a new awareness and her film is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama. It features a score by Michel Legrand (Umbrellas of Cherbourg), cameos by Legrand, Jean-Luc Godard, and Anna Karina and the colour opening sequence has been restored.

Review by Ray Durgnat on

We pretend that works of art, or even artists, are immortal; death is apt to be sentimentalised or paraphrased by violence (i.e., reduced to a merely social problem). Agnès Varda has taken up the challenge, restored death to its actual place at the hub of our lives, without falsifying the 'remoteness' with which we apprehend it.
