Review by Pam Keshavarzian on 28th May 2002

The film was increadibly powerful. In the day and age that the misery of Kurdish people and their lives is forgotten form the face of the world. Fugitives in their own lands.
This reflects the power of cinema, to bring images so powerful as the film "Blackboards". This film was even more special considering the constraints and restrictions facing the yound director Makhmalbaf.
Amazing viewing for the eye and the mind.
Congratulations to Samira.

In the brutal mountains of the Iran/Iraq border, two nomadic teachers, Reeboir and Said, roam the landscape in search of pupils. They carry their blackboards on their backs, sometimes using them as shelter, camoflage and as shields from gunfire. In this, her second film, Makhmalbaf creates a visually powerful and insightful depiction of a people on the edge of a country and a society.
