Opening by announcing, ‘neither mistress nor muse, Paris became a haven for a new kind of woman’ this documentary gives a revealing insight into a few of the mainly expatriate women that made such an important contribution to the artistic life of Paris between the wars. There are interviews with and about Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas, bookseller and pioneer of the French lending library Adrienne Monnier, writer Djuna Barnes and others, and an abundant use of photographs help to give a flavour of the period. There’s plenty of contemporary footage of street and café life as well as tantalising snippets of Gertrude Stein in the garden, James Joyce in the street and Josephine Baker on the stage. For anyone interested in this area, this is required viewing.
