The Straight Story
Film Description The true story of how 73 year-old Alvin Straight travels the three hundred miles on a 1966 John Dere lawnmower across Iowa and Wisconsin to visit his ailing brother. The brilliant, leisurely opening camera pan around suburban lawns and houses is reminiscent of Blue Velvet, but this is a much lighter, less weird yet still unmistakably Lynchian film.

Review by Wolfram Parge on 10th October 2002 Sometime in June 1994, Alvin Straight received word that his 80-year-old brother Henry was ill after suffering a stroke. The pair had not spoken for nearly ten years, and now Alvin wanted to see him. Without a driver's licence and limited vision he neither trusted public transport nor wanted anyone to take him there. He decided to make the journey on a 1966 John Deere lawnmower. Son on the 5 of July, 1994, Alvin loaded a 10-foot trailer with gasoline, food, clothes and camping equipment which he hitched to the back of the mower. Hundreds of miles and six weeks later, from Iowa to Wisconsin, the 73-year-old was reunited with his brother and by then Straight's odyssey had made headlines. Filmmaker and director David Lynch took on board The Straight Story with Richard Farnsworth, 78, coming out of retirement to play Alvin and Sissy Spacek as his daughter. With few words and wonderful performances, this moving true story is the all-American film to break your heart in awe and wonder.
