Film Description
An action-filled tale of Chinese Mafia warfare on the streets of New York, Year of the Dragon sees a tough cop suddenly realise that he is dealing with an evolution of organised crime, and battle against colleagues, friends and family to clean it up.
Michael Cimino's adaptation of Robert Daly's novel sees Mickey Rourke playing New York cop, Stanley White, who is assigned to Chinatown. White, however, makes it his mission to clean the streets of all crime, but his superiors do not give him much support. When he discovers that a young gang leader is making a ruthless bid for power in the local Mafia, White becomes dangerously obsessed with stopping him. But has he taken on too much or can he outwit the criminals single-handedly? His wife and City Hall don't think so...

Year of the Dragon was Cimino’s comeback film, and its reputation has fluctuated over the years. This handsome DVD transfer is a chance to reappraise a controversial (and hyper-violent) piece. Mickey Rourke – on fine, mannered form before his career imploded -- is the copper in this culture-clash thriller. 19 years since its original cinema release, the film (whose screenplay was written by no less than Oliver Stone) is now considered to be one of the key gang warfare movies. Advocating unprecedented degrees of psychological manipulation and violence, the opportunistic Joey Tai (John Lone) climbs his way to the top of the ladder to become the kingpin of the Chinese Mafia in New York City and undisputed leader of the Chinese community. Rourke is his implacable opponent. < less
