This adaptation of the classic Bronte novel is, admittedly, flawed. The cut glass English accents of the gypsy orphan Heathcliffe and the Yorkshire family the Earnshaws are unrealistic, but this hardly seems to matter. The tale of repressed love, passionate drama and ghosts is done justice and brought to the screen well by William Wyler; and is helped along by memorable performances by Merle Oberon and Sir Lawrence Olivier. The dramatice musical score contributes greatly and the painted backdrops of the moor, though unrealistic, are dramatic and suitably theatrical, as is he rest of the story. < less
