MovieMail's Review

A powerful satire on poverty, hunger and societal indifference, this dark film sees a family struggling to feed its unwholesome appetites. It brings new blood to the genre says Milo Wakelin.

A man collapses and dies on the busy streets of Mexico, leaving his family destitute. Written and directed by Jorge Michel Grau, this powerful exploration of poverty, hunger and indifference has a twist - the man’s autopsy reveals a human finger in his stomach (complete with painted nail). He’s a modern-day cannibal, and his wife and three children must pull together to carry on without him.

Like the Oscar-nominated Dogtooth (2009), this darkly gripping tale takes everyday dysfunction to horrific extremes, and critiques a wider society in which people feed off each other according to their appetites and needs, from corrupt cops to street prostitutes to revellers in a gay bar. The family’s hunger for human flesh is not just an acquired taste, but part of a nameless ritual they hope will restore normalcy to their lives.

The film features fine performances, and like Let Me In, the violence is sparse and shocking in its use, depicting the practical challenges of bringing home the bacon.

Film Description

Shocking, bloody and deeply affecting, Mexican cannibal horror drama ‘We Are What We Are’ is a visceral and powerful portrait of a family bound by a monstrous secret. When their good-for-nothing, debt-ridden husband and father dies in supremely undignified circumstances, a long-suffering wife and her teenage children are left to fend for themselves. But this is no ordinary family: they live as cannibals, and as their fractured family falls inexorably to pieces in the wake of Papa's death they must also take on the responsibilities of the ritual hunting and butchering that puts their meat on the table.
