MovieMail's Review

John Byrne's 1987 series starring Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson is very fondly remembered, making this DVD release a very welcome one.

This iconic BBC series was first transmitted in 1987 to widespread critical acclaim. Written by John Byrne, it starred a wealth of award-winning British talent, including Robbie Coltrane, Emma Thompson and Richard Wilson, in roles that brought national prominence.

Legendary Scottish rock‘n’roll outfit The Majestics are on the eve of their 1986 ‘Silver Jubilee’ tour, when their lead singer, Big Jazza McGlone is killed in a car crash. But with the appearance of his younger brother, Danny (Robbie Coltrane), and the addition of his old classmate Suzi Kettles (Emma Thompson) on guitar, the band’s fortunes appear to take a turn for the better – until trouble ensues for Scotland’s ‘Kings of Rock’ when a good-looking redhead joins the band on tour.

John Byrne’s darkly witty, finely-tuned scripts and an excellent cast make for a near-perfect pastiche of a touring band. At its simplest, Tutti Frutti is the story of a disintegrating band’s final tour, showing a group of failed, delusional men and the women who love and support them despite their obvious failures.

All six episodes of the great BBC Scotland comedy drama series penned by John Byrne. Over-the-hill Scottish rock band The Majestics are all set to embark on their farewell tour when their lead singer, Big Jazza McGlone, is killed in a car accident. At his funeral the group's manager, Eddie Clockerty (Richard Wilson), persuades Jazza's younger brother Danny (Robbie Coltrane) to join the band as a replacement. Emma Thompson co-stars as fellow band member and all-round sharp cookie Suzi Kettles.

The Tutti Frutti sleeve was designed from hand drawn paintings commissioned especially for the release by acclaimed Scottish artist John Byrne.
