MovieMail's Review

Olivia de Havilland plays a spinster with a secret in this Hollywood classic. James Oliver unfurls his hankie for the kind of unabashed melodrama they simply don’t make any more.

Here’s a fine example of what used to be called ‘women’s pictures’, those three-hankie weepies so popular in their day but too often unfairly ignored today. We begin during the London blitz; Olivia de Havilland (who won an Oscar for her role) is Jody Norris, a sour spinster with a secret. A flashback to America, during the Great War, reveals all...

In her youth, Jody spent a night of passion with an aviator that resulted in an illegitimate child (oh, the infamy!). A scheme was devised whereby she could adopt the bairn without tongues wagging, but it went awry; Jody saw another woman adopt her child and has been suffering ever since. By chance, she discovers her (now adult) son is in London too; can she tell him the truth?

Cynics, of course, will sneer at such a story but forget them and enjoy this for what it is, a high-toned tear-jerker. Such unabashed, impassioned melodrama is unfashionable in our age of irony but, if taken as intended, it still tugs at the heartstrings. This is glorious entertainment.

Film Description

One of the great romances, To Each His Own is an Oscar-winning drama from the golden age of Hollywood, and stars Olivia De Havilland, John Lund, Mary Anderson and Roland Culver.

Now living through The Blitz, Josephine Norris (Olivia de Havilland) looks back on her life to when she and Captain Bart Cosgrove (John Lund) fell in love. Their romance was brief, however, as Cosgrove was ordered back to the front line and later presumed dead, leaving Josephine alone and pregnant. So her child is not seen as illegitimate, Josephine leaves him with a family, hoping to later adopt him from them - but her plan fails. Will her son ever know his real mother and can Josephine learn to love again?
