Film Description

Spanning the 30 years from 1944-74, This Sceptred Isle contains over a dozen multiple-destination archive travelogues jam-packed with ideas for English day-trips and weekends away. City, coast and countryside fun and frolics and a celebration of the English history and heritage of some of the tourist hotspots of yesteryear as filmed by celebrated ‘quota quickie’ B-movie producer Harold Baim. A comprehensive near 6-hour collection of archive films that would have originally been seen at your local cinema as secondary features to some of the biggest movies of the 1950s, 60s & 70s.

Disc 1: Our Mr Shakespeare (1944) - Stratford-On-Avon and local Cotswold villages; A Pocket Full of Rye (1955) - Rye in Sussex, Romney Marshes & Bodiam Castle; Down Somerset Way (1957) - Touring around Somerset; The English Riviera (1958) - Coastal Devon, its beauty spots, historical buildings and resorts; In Glorious Devon (1958) - Plymouth from where the pilgrim fathers set sail for America in the 'Mayflower'; Royal County (1958) - The Norfolk Broads and Sandringham; Belle of Kent (1959) - Canterbury Cathedral and a tour round the 'Garden Of England' and Playground Spectacular (1960) - Blackpool and its thrills!

Disc 2: Stories from Lakeland (1961) - The tranquillity and dramatic scenery of the Lake District; World of Wax (1962) - A day-trip to Madame Tussaud's; The Quay to the Tor (1964) - The famous resort and surrounding countryside of Torquay; York (1972) - The ancient city and Roman capital of York with its celebrated Minster; The Plymouth Sound (1973) - The vibrant city of Plymouth, its Naval base and maritime history and Reserved for Animals (1974) Terry Wogan takes a trip to the Safari Park at Woburn Abbey.
