MovieMail's Review

Thanks largely to his two recent films Anything Else (2003) and Melinda and Melinda (2004), Woody Allen has enjoyed a not inconsiderable critical reappraisal of late. However, to enjoy the director at his freshest, most imaginative and peerlessly funny, a return to his 1970s output is essential. Blending slapstick humour with sharp, endlessly quotable one-liners, Bananas (1971), Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (1972), Sleeper (1973) and Love and Death (1975) show Allen at his most playful. Whether it’s the bumbling product tester kidnapped by rebels in Bananas, the cryogenically preserved health food shop owner re-awoken after 200 years in Sleeper or cowardly scholar Boris Grushenko in the epic historical satire Love and Death, Allen’s comic persona is given full reign. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex is a simply unforgettable collection of vignettes focusing on various aspects of sexuality including Woody as a sperm nervously awaiting dispatch, doctor Gene Wilder falling in love with a sheep and a hilarious Antonioni pastiche with Woody as Marcello.
The multi Oscar-winning Annie Hall (1977) and Manhattan (1979) are Woody Allen at his creative peak. Despite largely eschewing the physical comedy of his previous films, both point toward a more autobiographical style which would emerge fully - and starkly - in Stardust Memories (1980). Whilst both films deal with similar subject matter, there is a distinct shift in tone with Manhattan which sees Allen in more contemplative mood. The one-liners are however, still razor-sharp (‘No I didn’t read the piece on China’s faceless masses, I was, I was checking out the lingerie ads.’) Both films feature intelligent performances from Diane Keaton as the object of Allen’s desire and are handsomely shot by legendary DoP Gordon Willis. In Manhattan especially, his stunning monochrome photography is perfectly accompanied by the inextricable Gershwin score. Crowning a prolific decade, both Annie Hall and Manhattan are essential masterpieces of American cinema.

Film Description

Features six of Allen's enduring favourites: Annie Hall, Manhattan, Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex, Sleeper, Love & Death and Bananas. A fine selection of his "earlier, funnier" films made before his sojourn into classic adult drama. His comedy work would, alas, never be quite as sharp again.
