Film Description

Samantha Morton's directorial debut The Unloved taps into the harsh realities that thousands of children face each and every day and was originally screened as part of Channel 4's 'Britain's Forgotten Children' season.

11 year-old Lucy (Molly Windsor) has suffered years of neglect by her unstable parents (Robert Carlyle and Susan Lynch), and finally ends up being taken into care. The film tracks her experiences as she struggles to adapt to life in a children's home, and suffers the indignities of an under-resourced care system, as seen through the bewildered eyes of a child.

Samantha Morton wished The Unloved to be filmed for television rather than for cinema, thereby wishing to widen the film's potential audience to children who might not be able to afford to go to the cinema.
