MovieMail's Review

All is not well in the mythical kingdom of Euphrania. For a start, it’s hemmed in on all sides by belligerent countries and to add to its woes, it has a prince (Richard Chamberlain) who refuses to secure its borders by marrying neighbouring royalty. His problem is, that he’ll only marry for love. So, as is the way in all good fairy tales, the king (Michael Hordern) and the queen (Lally Bowers) organize a magnificent ball to which all eligible Royal princesses are invited to woo the recalcitrant prince. It’s here that Cinderella (Gemma Craven), a twinkly fairy godmother (Annette Crosbie), a frog, a dog (Fred) and a silver slipper come into his sphere with life-changing consequences.

As comforting as a cup of steaming tea and a slice of Battenberg, The Slipper and The Rose overflows with witty repartee and toe-tapping musical numbers, courtesy of the Sherman Brothers of Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fame. It’s a film for all the family and they sure don’t make ‘em like this anymore!

Film Description

A lavish updating, with songs, of the Cinderella story, The Slipper and the Rose stars the cherubic Gemma Craven and the iron-jawed Richard Chamberlain in the lead roles.

Richard Chamberlain plays Prince Edward, the heir to throne of Euphrania, who is expected to find a wife. His parents the King and Queen plan a Royal Ball to which all the princesses in the land will be invited so that he can find his bride. Meanwhile Cinderella lives in misery; her father has died and her wicked stepmother and awful sisters have made her the house servant. But with the arrival of her fairy Godmother comes three wishes and the chance for Cinderella to go to the ball...
