MovieMail's Review

The tenth most successful British film ever made, this was seen by an incredible 17 million cinemagoers in its day. James Oliver has a look at what the fuss was all about.

A superbly crafted melodrama, The Seventh Veil was a gargantuan hit on first release, even outperforming Brief Encounter. Indeed, in terms of tickets sold, it’s the tenth most successful British film ever.

After acclaimed concert pianist Francesca Cunningham (Todd) throws herself off a bridge, the psychiatrists turn to hypnosis to find the origins of her suicidal impulses. Under the influence, she reveals a desperate tale of isolation, forlorn romances and anguish occasioned by her brooding guardian (Mason). Can her condition be cured? Will she ever find the love that has so far eluded her? The film plays its audience as expertly as Francesca plays her piano. Todd is a perfect vision of innocence and Mason – the ultimate tall, dark, bad boy – was never as saturnine.

Mason shows up again on a notable extra, a short film, comparable to The London Nobody Knows, in which he extols the virtues of his home town, Huddersfield. It’s inevitably nostalgic but quite charming.

Film Description

Overripe and enjoyably OTT melodrama as a fragile concert pianist convinced she will never play again is cured by a psychiatrist who guides her through her past in a quest for the man she loves, whilst dark, brooding guardian Mason steers her away from frivolous romantic matters, driving her relentlessly to further her musical career.

Apparently this is the tenth most successful film in British cinemas ever with a viewed audience of 17 million paying cinemagoers
