Film Description

Bergman's first made-for-TV project revolves around a small troupe of actors who are prevented from performing a short play - The Rite, and are brought in front of a local magistrate on charges of obscenity. Sombre, sexually explicit and surreal, it was written during Bergman's tenure as head of the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre as a way of channelling his fury at reprimands he received there.
