Film Description
A popular pornographer in the 70s, Jacques is returning to the industry where he made his reputation to pay off debts. The tragic undertones, as Jacques come to the shattering realisation that he cannot depict love on screen and that his estranged son still hates him, contribute to the complex nature of this provocative film.

Jacques is a typical middle-aged retired man with family and money problems. However, Jacques was a pornographic film director who hasn't made a film since the early '80s. When offered the chance of some work, he grasps it, plunging into the contemporary porno scene like a fish out of water. Thinking he can produce porn as art he becomes dismayed by the impersonal, tacky business style of the new porn industry and quickly loses favour with his savvy young producer.
Jean-Pierre Leaud plays the aging pornographer trapped in his past. His teenage son (Jeremie Renier) hasn't spoken to him for years since he discovered what type of films he made. His marriage appears to be falling apart and his wife approves of the new job offer only so they can pay their debts.Jacques is falling apart. The film making disgusts him and he longs to be able to make one more art-porn film.
Director Bertrand Bonello pulls no punches in showing us the making of 21st century pornography to the point that the British film censors originally cut an 11 second scene featuring the French porn actress Ovide.
Yet this is not a pornographic film per-se. It is a searching insight into one man coming to terms with middle age, his relationship with his son and an inabilty or reluctance to adapt to the Post-Modern world. Leaud is marvellous in the role, as ordinary as ordinary can be. To him, making porn films is not just a job, its an artistic vocation thats not just about paying the bills. We watch him as everything begins to fall apart but somehow rooting for him and Doinel-like, wanting him to win through. < less
