Film DescriptionAn award-winning drama based on Roman Polanski's personal experience in the ghetto and pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman's autobiography, The Pianist tells the true story of Szpilman's experiences in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation. After the Jews of the city find themselves forced into a ghetto, Szpilman finds work playing in a cafe; when his family is deported in 1942, he stays behind and goes into hiding in the ruins of the war-torn city. An absorbing account of life under threat, the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Oscars for Best Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Adapted Screenplay (Ronald Harwood) and Best Director (Roman Polanski).
