This is a highly imaginative, exhilarating series of film lectures by the charismatic philosopher Slavoj Zizek, who explores a psychoanalytical perspective on a number of works of cinema, described by Zizek as ‘the ultimate pervert art…it doesn't give you what you desire, it tells you how to desire.’
Zizek, an eccentric, heavily-accented Slovenian, is a delightful guide, lacing his occasionally complex theories with generous film clips and a subtle wit. He adores Lynch and Hitchcock, and his insights into Pyscho, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Dr. are particularly brilliant. He cites the Marx Brothers as a perfect cinematic incarnation of the ego (Chico), superego (Groucho) and id (Harpo), and includes critically reviled works such as Eyes Wide Shut for reappraisal. His treatise is fascinating, and adding to the panache is Sophie Fiennes' ingenious use of film sets; Zizek actually appears to be in the films he discusses, reclining in Neo's chair in The Matrix for example. This will enthrall any film lover.
