Film Description
The first full commercial release of the 1972 film based on the play of the same name adapted and directed by Jane Arden. The film is an exploration into the mind of a young woman marked as a schizophrenic after suffering a mental breakdown only to find that the cause is not due to her insanity but rather a distorted sexual guilt constructed by the prohibitive community in which she lives.

This is not merely a DVD (and blue ray) release, it is an event. 'The Other Side of the Underneath' has acquired almost mythical status over the last three decades and it is to the great credit of the BFI that they have located the negative - at times presumed lost - and are giving it a first full commercial release. Rumours are that the transfers are superb.
The film was written and directed by the actor, playwright, screenwriter and poet Jane Arden (1927-82), making it the only 1970s British feature film with a solo directing for a woman. It explores the mental breakdown and subsequent rehabilitation of a young woman, in scenes ranging from the harshy realistic to the wildly fantastical. Called by the BBC at the time 'a major breakthrough in British Cinema' it is a must for anyone interested in the radical, alternative zones of the nation's film culture. Even more fortunately, is being released alongside two other features of the Jane Arden/Jack Bond team: 'Separation' (1967) and 'Anti-Clock' (1979). Those wishing to challenge the idea that British Cinema is cosy, safe and heritage-locked need look no further. < less
