a post-apocalyptic world, in which speech is a physical impossibility for
the survivors, some of whom are prepared to kill to possess the few
remaining women. Despite its bleak environs and aggressive atmosphere, this
slice of humanist sci-fi even manages the odd optimistic interlude.
