Film Description

Four of Bergman's later works, in which Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow star. In The Passion of Anna (1968), Sydow plays a man living quietly on an island who becomes entangled with a beautiful, mysterious widow. Bergman interpolates the story with the actors discussing their roles. Shame (1968) was Bergman's response to the Vietnam war, In it von Sydow and Ullman play musicians stranded on an island during a military campaign. An intense and intimate portrait of people trapped by the brutality, noise and dehumanising influence of war. Hour of the Wolf is a study of an artist in crisis, charged with horror and eroticism. Also includes The Serpent's Egg (1977), the tale of an out-of-work trapeze artist in 1920s Berlin.
