Forbidden infatuation, as with this adaptation of LP Hartley’s tale of the relationship between a chauffeur and a Lady, is a wonderful visual subject for cinema. Longing, jealousy and voyeurism can be set to work in a network of social boundaries and locations that continually evoke the possibility of transgression. Here, Sarah Miles plays widowed Lady Franklin, who, on her departure from a psychiatric hospital, starts to talk to her chauffeur, a bullish ex-Sergeant Major, thereby sending his thoughts towards her along dangerous routes.

Along with its Grand Prix from Cannes in 1973, The Hireling won three BAFTAs: for Art Direction, Costume Design, and – for Peter Egan, who oozes effortless, insolent charm as an aristocratic politician who takes Lady Franklin’s eye – Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. Also deserving of mention is Marc Wilkinson’s score. His theme for Blood on Satan’s Claw was memorably unsettling. Here too, his music calls up dark shades of discomfiture that are never quite dispelled.
