Film DescriptionA film based on Henry James' book, Washington Square. Olivia de Havilland won an Academy award for her portrayal of Catherine Sloper, a shy and backwards young woman who lives with her father, Dr. Austin Sloper, who never stops reminding her that she can never be the beautiful, graceful creature that was her mother, and who died in childbirth. Catherine is wealthy though and will inherit more at the passing of her father. So, when a poor but handsome, well-bred man begins to court Catherine, her father becomes suspicious that he must be after her money.
