Film Description

Set in a posh Melbourne girls boarding school during the Victorian era, The Getting of Wisdom is a vivid, amusing drama that follows the development of a 13 year-old girl from the outback. Her spiky independence raises havoc with the manners of the place and time.

Based on the novel by Henry Handel Richardson, the film stars Susannah Fowle as Laura Rambotham, a gifted young girl admitted to a prestigious boarding school for girls in the 1880s. Hailing from the outback, the girl is ridiculed for her dress and behaviour by the wealthy and snobbish students in the oppressively class-conscious school, with the odious Lilith (Kim Deacon) threatening to reveal the shameful fact that Laura's mother is a mere postmistress. As time passes however, Laura begins to demonstrate to her indifferent teachers the extraordinary nature of her talents.
