Film Description

Written by Melissa Matheson (E.T.) and Stephen Zito, The Escape Artist was adapted from David Wagoner's novel. Francis Ford Coppola, who bought the property for himself to direct, eventually passed it to acclaimed cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (The Black Stallion), who made it his directorial debut.

A magician's son tries to follow in his father's footsteps. Leaving home to join the magic act of his uncle Burke and aunt Sibyl, teenager Danny Masters (Griffin O'Neal) soon finds himself in trouble when he becomes involved with Stu (Raul Julia), the son of corrupt local mayor Leon Quinones (Desi Arnaz). Danny is confronted with the circumstances surrounding his father's untimely death - facts that had previously been kept from him.
