Film Description

Features Ralph Thomas's seven 'Doctor' comedies based on Richard Gordon's novels and beginning with one of the most successful British comedies of all time, Doctor in the House (1954). Also features Doctor at Sea (1955), Doctor at Large (1957), Doctor in Love (1960), Doctor in Distress (1963), Doctor in Clover (1966) and Doctor in Trouble (1970).

In Doctor in the House, Dirk Bogarde stars as Simon Sparrow, a newly arrived medical student at St. Swithin's hospital in London. Whenever it seems that too much fun may be getting in the way of his studies, chief surgeon Sir Lancelot Spratt (James Robertson Justice) is on hand to remind him of his duties.

In Doctor at Sea, Dr. Sparrow becomes a medical officer on an all-male cargo ship to escape unwanted female advances back on land. Then they pick up two passengers - including a certain Miss Bardot. Doctor at Large sees Dr Sparrow graduate and attempt to make his way in the world.

Bogarde then bowed out of the series and Michael Craig and Leslie Phillips took up the stethoscopes as Doctors Burke and Hare. In Doctor in Love, the newly-qualified doctors set up in practice and get involved in a number of amorous exploits.

Doctor in Distress saw Bogarde return after an absence of six years, but here James Robertson Justice takes centre stage as the surgeon who slips a disc and becomes an irascible patient at his own hospital!

Doctor in Clover sees Leslie Phillips take centre stage once more, as Dr Gaston Grimsdyke, who is looking for a little romance among the nurses of the hospital - much to the irritation of Sir Lancelot Spratt. The last in the series, Doctor in Trouble, sees Leslie Phillips (as Dr Burke this time) stowing away on a cruise ship when his girlfriend is assigned a modelling job aboard the vessel.

Packed with a generation of great comedy actors, these are seven doses of classic British comedy.
