When she is murdered, he becomes the prime suspect... gripping stuff, but the scenes Ladd shares with the beautiful Veronica Lake are surprisingly sensitive. Raymond Chandler famously wrote the script drunk to get it finished on time, but this vivid mystery never puts a foot wrong.
