Alan Hunter believes this exploration of the Red Army Faction in the 1960s is a must see for the politically alert.

The story is of the Red Army Faction growing out of Germany’s student movement in the late 1960s. It’s superbly photographed and has a fine cast, but earns endless controversy simply because there were hundreds of members of the RAF and tens of victims. All think their story should be told. This film concentrates on the leaders: petty crook and borderline everything-opath, Andreas Baader, his girlfriend Gudrun Ensslin and journalist turned revolutionary, Ulricke Meinhof. We spend time on the highlights and the genesis of the RAF, but next to no time on how the complete lack of response by those in power caused so many people over so many years to join a violent revolutionary group.

A must see for those of us becoming adults at the time and for the politically alert of any age, it may not be perfect but at least it’s a framework. If you were one of the millions who demonstrated for no Iraq invasion and were appalled that it made no difference then you’ll identify with the motives, if not the crimes.

Film Description

Dramatisation of the inner workings of 1970s radically left-wing German terrorist group The Red Army Faction (RAF). Moritz Bleibtreu, Martina Gedeck and Johanna Wokalek star as Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin, the trio at the core of the organisation, which carried out bombings, robberies, kidnappings and assassinations throughout the late 1960s and 70s in an attempt to redress the wrongs of the Nazi generation. Bruno Ganz co-stars as Horst Herold, the head of the German police who must gain an understanding into the young terrorists' reasoning even as he hunts them down.
