Film Description

One of the first films of the Iranian New Wave, ‘The Apple’ is the extraordinary debut of Samira Makhmalbaf, made when she was just seventeen. It is an insightful, wise and touching account of a true story that uses the actual people involved in the case.

Two 12 year-old sisters have lived all their lives as prisoners of their impoverished father and blind mother ('if they are exposed to the sun, they will fade like flowers' says the father). The intervention of a social worker frees them to explore the world outside their home.
