MovieMail's Review

The stated aim of The Age of Stupid is to ‘turn 250 million viewers into climate activists’. McLibel director Franny Armstrong takes five stories from around the world – from a Nigerian woman, two Iraqi children, a New Orleans resident, an alpine guide and an Indian cheap flights entrepreneur – while Pete Postlethwaite plays a future archivist, looking back on our present world. As he ponders the all-too evident trails of destruction, displacement, oil terrorism, natural disasters, environmental change and human ingenuity countered by profit-motivated short-termism, the question that forms in his mind is telling: ‘We wouldn’t be the first life form to wipe itself out. But what would be unique about us is that we did it knowingly. What does that say about us? … The question I’ve been asking is: why didn’t we save ourselves when we had the chance? Is the answer because on some level we weren’t sure if we were worth saving?’. There is something here for everyone, even if you are already acquainted with the stark predictions and the need for action.

Film Description

Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at ‘archive’ footage from 2007 and asking, “Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?” Taking five stories - of a Nigerian woman, two Iraqi children, a New Orleans resident, a French mountain guide and an Indian budget airline entrepreneur - The Age of Stupid weaves them together in a compelling case of just where we are now in human history. It's a powerful call to action, and has the stated aim of turning '250 million viewers into climate activists'. “Knocks spots off An Inconvenient Truth” - The Ecologist.
