MovieMail's Review

Adapted from J.M. Barrie's gentle assault on the British class system, this handsome adaptation does an estimable job of transferring the popular play to the screen.

It should be acknowledged, however, that gritty realism is not high on the agenda: there can't be many aristocrats who take their entire households with them as they cruise on their yacht. But that's just what Lord Loam (Parker) does, until a spot of inclement weather causes a shipwreck. Marooned on a deserted island, the toffs find themselves unable to cope. Happily, their butler Crichton (More) is on hand to attend to their needs. But as they acclimatise to island life, a new social order emerges.

Blessed with resources that a provincial rep director could only dream about, Lewis Gilbert delights in revealing an island paradise the play could only suggest. But his greatest asset is his talented cast. Kenneth More could do this sort of thing in his sleep, although he's wide awake here, delivering one of his best performances. Charming and witty, this is a small gem.
