Rena Makogiannaki on OlivierAssayas' family drama, Summer Hours.

Hélène is the widowed matriarch of a large family; she lives in a beautiful house once owned by her adored uncle, an artist and collector who has left her some very valuable paintings and pieces of Art Deco furniture. When she dies her three children (Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling and Jérémie Renier) have to decide what to do with the family home and its belongings. One of them believes that they should keep everything, but his siblings disagree, claiming the house and its memories belong in the past. What gradually unfolds is a story of loss and a portrait of a family growing apart.

The second in a series of films produced by the Musée d’Orsay (the first was Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s Flight of the Red Balloon), Summer Hours unsurprisingly debates the importance of art and the purpose of museums. Beautifully acted and sensitively directed, it is a sophisticated drama exploring the ethical issues of inheritance. The film is refreshingly generous to its three protagonists, refusing to demonise or judge; but can they find a compromise?

Film Description

The divergent paths of three adult siblings collide when their mother, heiress to her uncle's exceptional 19th century art collections, dies suddenly. Left to come to terms with their differences, Adrienne, a New York designer, Frederic, a Parisian economist and Jeremie, a businessman in China, confront the end of childhood, their shared memories, background and visions of the future. A tender examination of family, memory and the value of objects.
