MovieMail's Review

Featuring brilliant character actors and moments of real filmic chutzpah, Richard Ayoade's debut feature is one of the British movies of 2011, says Alex Davidson.

On paper Submarine may sound unpromising - a coming-of-age story of a Welsh teenager’s infatuation with a girl at his school, directed by a comedian best known as a star of The IT Crowd. Yet Submarine is already set to be one of the British movies of the year, as Richard Ayoade infuses the film with moments of cinematic beauty, while his script is packed with brilliant comic sequences. A host of brilliant character actors fill in the supporting roles, including Noah Taylor, Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine.

Submarine follows Oliver (Craig Roberts), a permanently deadpan schoolboy who attempts to woo Jordana, a quirky girl in his year. Neither character is especially sympathetic - she bullies another girl, he attempts to poison her dog (albeit for a skewed compassionate reason) - which makes them intriguing and different compared with the unbelievable saps and wisecrackers who usually populate such dramas. Ayoade also demonstrates some real filmic chutzpah - for example, in one scene the screen fizzles red after the loss of virginity. Touching and bittersweet, it’s an enormously impressive debut.

Film Description

The directorial debut feature of British actor Richard Ayoade, this acclaimed coming-of-age comedy follows 15-year-old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) in his dual quest to keep his family together and to lose his virginity before his 16th birthday. Set in Swansea, the film charts Oliver's growing concerns about the relationship between his father, Lloyd (Noah Taylor), a depressive and recently-unemployed marine biologist, and his mother (Sally Hawkins), who appears to be harbouring a crush on fawning new age guru Graham (Paddy Considine). Meanwhile, Oliver ponders how to broach the sticky subject of sex with his eczema-prone, pyromaniac girlfriend Jordana (Yasmin Paige).
