Film Description
Strange Fruit regroup to perform at the Wisbech Open Air Rock Festival after splitting up twenty-one years earlier during the glam rock era. The intervening years have treated all of the band members very differently...
Rock band Strange Fruit split up in 1977 after a disastrous concert performance, but twenty-one years later keyboardist Tony (Stephen Rea) is asked to reform the group for a reunion gig (at the Wisbech Open Air Rock Festival). He manages to trace bassist Les (Jimmy Nail), drummer Beano (Timothy Spall), singer Ray (Bill Nighy) and manager Karen (Juliet Aubrey). Guitarist Brian (Bruce Robinson) cannot be found, however, but the group decide to tour without him. Complete with their old roadie, Hughie (Billy Connolly), they set off on a warm-up tour, but it isn't long before the old rivalries come bubbling to the surface.
This film tracks the highs and lows of a 'reformed' (in more ways than one), one time classic 70's rock band.

This film tracks the highs and lows of a 'reformed' (in more ways than one), one time classic 70's rock band.
The original split of the 'Strange Fruits' was due to drugs, excess and intervention by God (trust me on this one), however when one of the original members are approached for a reunion gig at the very place that caused their break up, it is time to get the band back together.
Finally piecing together Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall and Bill Nighy they realise the prodigy of their group, lead guitarist Brian Lovell (cameoed by a wonderful Bruce Robinson - writer and director of 'Withnail and I' amongst others) has died and so they recruit a younger sound in the form of Hans Matheson and head out onto the roads of Holland to break the waters...again.
Billy Connelly's humorous intervention as 'road dog' Huey acts as a narrator who gives great insight into the history of the band and the relationships (or lack of) between certain members of the group.
Hilarious, heartwarming and with a cracking climax at Wisbeach, I am happy to sit and watch this film daily. < less
