A detective series that treats its audience with intelligence and offers genuine texture and complexity. If you liked The Killing, this will be right up your alley, says Barry Forshaw.

After the unprecedented success of the Danish The Killing, there has been a scramble to find something similar - a foreign detective series which treat its audience with intelligence, and offers genuine texture and complexity. In fact, that show was already around, and Spiral has enjoyed a similar word-of-mouth success. So the DVD issues have been a welcome chance to rediscover just what was quite so special about this French series. Spiral has been gradually building up a reputation over several well-received seasons. At the centre of this gritty, authentic show is police captain Laure Bethaud (ably played by Caroline Proust), uninterested in the conventional feminine virtues, driving herself and her team with unsparing energy. And as the increasingly hard-edged episodes here show, this is a series both written and cast from strength, with the tenacious female protagonist surrounded by a flintily-characterised dramatis personae. If you're feeling deprived of the kind of fix that you used to get from Sarah Lund, then Spiral - and the non-nonsense Laure Bethaud - will be right up your alley.

Film Description

When the body of a young woman is found murdered and mutilated on a disused railway track in the north of Paris, police captain Laure Berthaud seizes the opportunity to redeem a tarnished reputation and leads her squad on the hunt for the sadistic killer. Laure and her team delve into the unsavoury depths of the Paris underworld in their search for clues.

Meanwhile, Judge François Roban probes a bribery scandal involving a prominent politician; the impeccable career of Public Prosecutor Pierre Clément falls into disrepute, and ambitious barrister Joséphine Karlsson attempts to untangle herself from some dubious associations.

As the world of each character spirals out of control, the pace quickens, the narratives overlap and the boundary between private and professional lives becomes increasingly blurred.
