The superb French police drama Spiral has gained a loyal following on BBC Four, and you don't have to be a detective to work out why. Like CSI, it boasts dashing investigators and extraordinarily gruesome murders, but the bleak Parisian setting, mordant dialogue and the tangled lives of its flawed protagonists lend what would otherwise be a standard police procedural thriller the class of a modern noir, with grainy, handheld, camerawork capturing stark, dimly-lit offices and billows of cigarette smoke.

Spiral centres around the triumvirate of impossibly handsome Deputy Prosecutor Pierre Clément (Grégory Fitoussi), tenacious Police Captain Laure Berthaud (Caroline Proust) and steel-eyed Judge François Roban (Philippe Duclos). Each series centres around a single, shocking murder, sparking an investigation which soon expands to reveal corruption and betrayal involving the investigators themselves, with stories exploring different aspects of the judicial system.

Series 3 has yet to hit British screens, so now is the perfect time to revisit the first two series on DVD, or explore this gripping, well-made drama for the first time.

Film Description

All the episodes from the first two series of the highly-acclaimed, gritty French political crime drama. The discovery of a young woman's badly beaten body on a rubbish tip in Paris sets in motion a police investigation that unravels a trail of corruption from the dark worlds of prostitution and drugs, to the halls of government, business, and the judiciary itself.
