A Spider-man sequel was inevitable; however, we could never have predicted it would be the triumph that it is. Unlike lesser comic adaptations, Raimi’s enthusiasm and respect for the characters pours from the screen. Bravely focusing on Peter Parker and his troubled relationship with sweetheart Mary Jane rather than the web-slinging exploits of his costumed alter-ego, Raimi expands on the original story with surprising and far-reaching revelations. Toby Maguire returns as Parker, mixing awkward slapstick with goofy grins to create a hero you can really root for, while Kirsten Dunst is utterly charming (as always) as the flame haired MJ. Add to this a substantially improved villain in the form of Alfred Molina as Dr Octopus as well as some truly amazing action sequences and you have a universally enjoyable film.

Film Description

Spider-Man is back, and it's bigger, bolder, brighter and better in this box-office smash hit sequel to the 2002 live action film based on the Marvel comic strip. Two years have passed since the events of the first film, and the mild-mannered Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) faces new challenges as he struggles with 'the gift and the curse', desperately trying to balance his dual identities as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man and his life as a college student. Tormented by his secrets, Peter finds that his relationships with all those he holds dear are in danger of unraveling, while his life-long yearning for Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) becomes even stronger as he fights the impulse to reveal his secret life and declare his love.

It works well because of the character-driven story and Raimi's understanding of his subject matter. Out of costume for much of the film, this is primarily a story about Peter Parker and his struggle to win the heart of the girl he loves. Add to that a complex and formidable villain in the shape of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and you have a truly impressive film.
