Film Description
An African family sets out across the desert to find a new life in this beautiful drama from Belgian director Marion Hansel.
When his village well dries up after a prolonged draught, Rahne (Isaka Sawadogo), decides to travel east with his wife Mouna (Carole Karemera), his three children, some goats and sheep. Although most of the village has journeyed south in search of a new life, Rahne is convinced he can find sanctuary, even though the route will take them across hostile lands under a searing sun. Despite the daily struggle, the exuberance and spirit of one of his children, Shasha (Asma Nouman Aden), helps give them the strength to succeed.

Forced to flee their desert village due to severe drought and the threat of civil war, Rahne, his wife and their three children head off on an unknown quest for water and safety. Taking with him his only possessions – a handful of sheep, a few goats and a dromedary – Rahne, the only literate villager, chooses to travel in the opposite direction to his fellow migrants, and his family are faced with a treacherous and uncertain journey in the fierce, relentless sun in the hope of survival. Based on Marc Durin-Valois’ prize winning novel, this is an enthralling tale of exodus and hope that has a wonderful soundtrack and is beautifully photographed. It is certain to be of interest to anyone concerned about the problems that face Africa and its many inhabitants who live at the mercy of its natural and man-made threats. < less
