MovieMail's Review

Anyone who’s sick to death of the awful Star Wars prequels needs to see Serenity. An extension of director Joss Whedon’s TV series Firefly, Serenity is a terrific Sci-Fi western that capitalises on all the things we loved about the original Star Wars films and invents some pretty good stuff of its own.
Malcolm Reynolds (a charming Han Solo-esque smuggler) captains the decrepit space ship Serenity and together with his crew they exploit the black market in a future controlled by a corrupt organisation called the Alliance. When a deadly Alliance operative targets crew member River, a girl with telepathic abilities, the group go on the run to discover the dark secrets buried in her past.
While the film contains impressive action sequences and an inventive plot, it’s the camaraderie onboard Serenity that makes this film so fantastic. Lively banter, bickering rivalry and a smidgeon of sexual tension make the tense finale all the more involving. Whedon had already proved his calibre on the hugely successful TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and this terrific film proves he is more than capable of making the transition to the big screen.

Film Description

A terrific feature-length debut from Joss Whedon, the man behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Serenity is adapted from his cult TV series Firefly, and is a sparky sci-fi adventure featuring great action scenes and an exciting cinematic imagination at work.

500 years in the future, after a galactic civil war has united all the space colonies under the repressive Alliance, former rebel soldier Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) captains the Firefly class cargo ship 'Serenity', taking on odd jobs and scoring heists where he can to keep his ship and his crew in the air, all the while trying to avoid the attentions of the authorities. When he picks up Simon Tam (Sean Maher) and his disturbed sister River (Summer Glau), Mal ends up with more trouble than he could have bargained for. On the run from the Alliance, River has been the subject of horrific government experiments to develope her latent psychic powers. Determined to get her back, the Alliance dispatches ruthless assassin The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and Mal and his crew find themselves hunted throughout the galaxy. But when they discover an even darker secret the Alliance would like to keep hidden, they finally have their chance to hit back.
