Film Description
A film about the inner life of a woman during a period of breakdown - marital, and possibly mental. Her past and possible future are revealed through a fragmented and often humorous narrative, in which dreams and desires are as real as the ’swinging’ London (complete with Procul Harum music and Mark Boyle light show) of the film’s setting.

'Separation' is the first feature film of the Jane Arden/Jack Bond team. Jane Arden (1927-82) wrote the script and played the lead; Bond directed. It follows a woman, Jane, as her relationship with her husband - the ever-excellent David de Keyser - crumbles and she drifts towards a younger man, played by Ian Quarrier. It offers a convincing look of sixties London in both black and white and colour sequences; the music is by Procul Harum and Stanley Myers. The film is a mosaic, and reality and the imagination become increasingly hard to distinguish as Jane explores her inner and outer worlds.
For anyone interested in British cinema, particularly its radical, alternative zones, 'Separation' is a fascinating rediscovery. It is released by the BFI alongside the two other Arden/Bond features, 'The Other Side of Underneath' (1972) and 'Anti-Clock' (1979). < less
