Film Description

Myra Savage is a highly strung spiritual medium who carries out séances in her dark Victorian house. She convinces her weak-willed husband Billy to ‘borrow’ a child and go through the ritual of presenting it as a kidnapping. Then, when all seems lost, she will demonstrate her extraordinary powers by holding a séance and offering her services to the baffled parents and police. Though Billy inexpertly carries out the kidnapping, the horror of these instructions convinces him that Myra has finally crossed the threshold of insanity.

Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough give outstanding performances in this classy British thriller, with Attenborough winning a BAFTA for Best British Actor and Stanley scoring an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a disturbed psychic medium. Bryan Forbes won a Writers' Guild award, an Edgar and a BAFTA nomination for this film, which he both wrote and directed.
