Film DescriptionA young painter is photographed giving a lift to a singer. A magazine creates an exposé of their 'secret romance' and a bitter libel case ensues in order to restore their honour. As relevant now as when it was made, this is a pointed attack on the power of the press and their practices in the newly-Americanised postwar Japan of 1950. Kurosawa was outraged by the disrespectful actions of the gutter press and his film highlights the need for ordinary individuals to speak out against injustice and corruption.
