Requiem is a sympathetic character study of a profoundly distressed mind drawn from a real-life case. Sandra Hüller delivers an absolutely outstanding performance as Michaela, a young woman who leaves rural Bavaria to study in the big city. Her new freedoms allow her to experiment with boys and fashion, but she's troubled by a return of the epilepsy that blighted her teenage years. The family priest prescribes a trip to the doctor but a flash young cleric intervenes and suggests she might be possessed.
The resultant 'exorcism' inspired several schlock horror films, but Schmid eschews sensation, handling the material with great restraint. This is a serious, fair minded and overwhelmingly sad affair: Michaela is a victim of a great many problems, and none of them are supernatural. She's a fragile soul, easily bruised and she is undone by people who think they are helping. This is graceful, sensitive filmmaking with a world class actress at its heart. It’s also been honoured with many awards including Best Actress in the BBC 2 Culture Show’s Alternative Oscars.

Film Description

After a breakdown during her first year of university, a young epileptic woman is convinced by those closest to her that she is possessed by an evil entity. The family seek the help of a priest in order to cast out the demon, but as the situation accelerates, the young woman must decide if she is indeed possessed, or whether she has succumbed to a crisis of faith. This powerful horror/drama is based on true events and has garnered much critical praise.
