In the world of special effects, Ray Harryhausen is a true auteur. The dozens of films on which he worked are remembered not for their actor or directors, but for the weird and wonderful creatures he painstakingly brought to life through the magic of stop-motion.

This box set contains three of Harryhausen’s early films from the 1950s, beautifully restored and presented with hours upon hours of extras. These A-list B-movies are well-crafted, intelligently plotted, and follow various buttoned-down army types and bespectacled scientists as they battle a giant octopus, a Venusian space-monster and an alien invasion.

Above all, this collection demonstrates Harryhausen’s uncanny ability to invest inanimate objects - even spinning flying saucers - with personality. Harryhausen’s work directly inspired the likes of Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton; his contribution to film history is quite unique, and his ability to delight viewers of almost any age is unrivalled.

Special mention must be made of the optional, and quite superb, newly colourized versions; made with Harryhausen’s consent, they will keep these fantastic films fresh for generations to come.
