Film Description
A beautiful film, full of ideas and humanity, that is both a study of a city and some of its inhabitants. Romain Duris plays a dancer with a heart condition who does not know whether he will live or die. However, imagining his death suddenly gives new meaning to his life, to other peoples’ lives, and to the life of the whole city.
Paris by Cedric Klapisch is an uplifting, warm movie with an excellent cast and the streets of the city itself taking centre stage.
Several scenarios exist centered on a young dancer, Pierre played by the exemplary Romain Duris who has a terminal heart condition that only a transplant may cure. He is supported by his caring sister Elise (Juliette Binoche)a single mother with three children. All of the cast have ties, some tenuous to Pierre and Elise; all linked by an attachment to Paris.
Each have their own stories of love, life and occasionally, tragedy to tell. Fabrice Luchini plays a university professor besotted with his female student (Melanie Laurent) Francois Cluzet plays his architect brother with issues of his own whilst Albert Dupontel leads a group of happy-go-lucky market traders.
Just when the plots seem to be too many and convoluted Klapisch uses his biggest star, Paris to pull everything together. The movie never descends into farce or chaos yet neither does it resolve some of the issues faced by the cast. In the end it mirrors life, love, doubt and perhaps more tragedy as we are taken on a beautiful, emotional taxi-ride through the city streets.
