MovieMail's Review

James Mason and Ava Gardner play the passionate pairing in this heady melodrama of a sailor condemned to everlasting life and a woman fated to destroy those she loves.

Albert Lewin’s ravishing film, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, must be one of the most powerful depictions of passion ever committed to celluloid. James Mason stars as the legendary sailor doomed to travel the seas forever unless he can find a woman who loves him so much she is willing to die for him. He drops anchor in a Spanish port and encounters Pandora (Ava Gardner), a cool, cruel beauty who attracts any man who meets her, often to his own doom - she claims her first victim in the first ten minutes.

Heightened drama on this scale an easily seem ridiculous, yet Lewin’s command of the most outré scenes - Gardner writhing in ecstasy as her fiancé destroys his sports car, a resurrection at a frenzied bull fight - makes the extreme action mesmerising rather than absurd. He is helped immeasurably by the excellent performances (Mason is particularly strong in a difficult role) and Jack Clayton’s gorgeous Technicolor photography, colouring the passion in heady shades of scarlet and turquoise. A must for melodrama fans, and a treat for anyone who loves cinema and its most mystical - and sensual.

Film Description

Pandora and The Flying Dutchman is writer, producer and director Albert Lewin's lushly romantic Technicolor visualisation of the often-told legend of the sea. A glamorous Ava Gardner plays the beautiful, spoiled nightclub singer and femme fatale Pandora, who falls hard for the charismatic James Mason as Hendrik, a seaman eternally condemned to sail the seven oceans until he can find a woman willing to die for his love. Unavailable theatrically for many years and never previously available for home viewing, the film has now been beautifully restored.
