Cocteau's fantastical updating of the Orpheus legend is pure cinematic poetry. Jean Marais plays the man whose wife, Eurydice, is killed by a Princess's motorcycling henchmen. Through a mirror, he follows her into the Underworld, where the Princess grants them new life together. Unforgettable and profoundly influential.

Plenty of Marais, who was one of the best looking male stars of the era - why didn't the director tell him not to frown in almost every shot? Or was he always this way? Well worth another view if you are a Cocteau fan. < less
